Should I Use The Self-Cleaning Feature On My Oven?

Question:  Hi Linda, I know you love to cook so I wanted to ask you if I should use my oven's self-cleaning feature? I've heard that I shouldn't? Kathy

Answer:  Hi Kathy, Thank you for writing. The self-clean feature of most ovens will bring the temperature in the oven very high, to around 1000° F in order to burn off the drips and splatters and turn them into ashes for easy cleanup. Unfortunately, this high temperature is stressful for the components in your oven and can cause control panels or fuses to burn out. While you will probably be able to safely use the self cleaning feature, there is definitely a risk of burning out your components. I personally do not use it for this reason and prefer clean it myself by hand using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. I sprinkle the baking soda onto the inside of the oven and then add the vinegar. It makes a very bubbly chemical reaction (which I love). I leave it sit for a few hours or overnight and then I wipe clean. This method is safe and effective and uses natural products that you don't have to worry will get into your food. Linda, YouTips4U
